Ellen Ann Farr was born on January 24, 1844 in Sopchoppy (Wakulla), Florida and died on October 12, 1916 somewhere in Florida. She lived to be 72 years old.
She was a Seminole Indian. She is buried at West Sopchoppy Cemetery, Wakulla County, Fl. Her tombstone is inscribed with her maiden name. Many Creek and Seminole Indian women during this time period kept their madien names, and in some instances, their husbands adopted the woman's last name. While this custom deviated from the customs of white settlers, it better matched their native customs where the female owned the land and house. |
