Mr. Robert Olin Giddens, 86 of 1803 Whispering Pines Rd. in Albany died at his home on Friday January 25, 2013.
Funeral services will be Tuesday January 29, 2013 11:00 AM at Byne Memorial Baptist Church. Dr. Matthew Nance and Rev. Charlie Brown Officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Memory Gardens Cemetery. Bob was born in Miami, FL, and lived in Worth Co., from 1927 to 1934, when his family moved to Albany. He was the son of the late Idus R. Giddens and Mattie Kathleen Brim Giddens. The youngest of 5 boys, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Rupert, Wilton, Frank and Weyman and his nephew Jan Giddens. All of the 5 brothers served our country in the military during World War II, Bob in the Navy as an aviation fire fighter from 1943 to 1946. After 30 years as purchasing manager for the Dougherty County School System, he retired to enjoy his passion for gardening, wood carving, fishing, baseball and his practice of teasing his family.
A longtime member of Byne Memorial Baptist Church, Bob loved the Lord, his family, friends and the Church. He was a faithful member of the Open Door Sunday School class. He played softball in the church league for the Byne "Reds" for many years and was extremely proud of the time he played with his son when Tom became old enough to play. He also enjoyed taking family and friends to Vogel State Park for vacation.
Bob had a deep respect for education and placed high regard for the teaching profession. He was especially pleased that his children and grandchildren went to college. Linda, Casey, and for a while Tom, were all teachers and had his highest praise.
Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Frances Gatlin Giddens, Albany; daughter, Linda Giddens Darrah (Marshall), Hamilton, GA; son, Thomas Robert Giddens (Carol), Kennesaw, GA; three granddaughters, Mary Quinn Roper, Columbus, GA; Casey Taylor Giddens, Destin, FL; Kelly Paige Giddens, Tuscaloosa, AL; and one great-grandson, Dakota Quinn Roper, Columbus, GA.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Kimbrell-Stern. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Byne Memorial Baptist Church, 2832 Ledo Rd., Albany, GA 31707.

Linda Giddens Darrah, 66, of Albany, GA, passed away on November 4, 2017 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital after complications from a massive heart attack. She was lovingly surrounded by her husband, daughter, mother, and brother. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:00 p..m. at Byne Memorial Baptist Church. Dr. Kerry Reeves will officiate. Interment will follow at Floral Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Linda lived the majority of her life in Albany, GA, except for the time she and Marshall lived in Hamilton, GA, to be near her daughter and grandson. She was a lifelong member of Byne Memorial Baptist Church. Her love of the mountains and bluegrass music led her to attend college at North Georgia State University in Dahlonega, GA, where she received a degree in English/Journalism. She then received her 6 year teaching certificate from Valdosta State University.
She taught English Literature for 30 years in the Dougherty County School system and particularly enjoyed her years teaching the gifted program. Upon retirement, her energies shifted to spending time with her grandchildren who lovingly call her Mam.
Always a voracious reader and lifelong learner, she was especially proud of her daughter earning her Doctorate degree. Other hobbies of Linda’s included cooking and traveling with her husband, and she was an antique connoisseur. She loved decorating her home for Christmas where it was not unusual for her to have a “theme tree” in every room.
Her love for Alabama football came about after her two nieces, Casey and Kelly, attended the University of Alabama. On any fall Saturday you could find her in her BAMA jersey cheering “Roll Tide Roll.”
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert O. Giddens, and father-in-law, Harold Darrah.
Linda leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her husband, Marshall Darrah, mother, Frances Giddens, brother, Tom Giddens (Carol), daughter, Dr. Quinn Wulff (Chris), stepdaughter Denise Butler (Jamie), stepson Adam Darrah, nieces, Casey Giddens Miller (Stephen) and Kelly Giddens, her mother-in-law, Louise R. Martin, her sister and brother-in-law, Patsy Darrah (H.P. Ritch), brother-in-law, Daniel Darrah, and grandchildren, Quinn Roper, Brandon Butler, Darrah Butler, Gabriella Darrah, Lia Darrah and Ally Darrah.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Byne Memorial Baptist Church.

50 2001 September 11, 2001 - 911 - Islamic fundamentalist terrorists hijack four U.S. airliners and crash them into the Pentagon and the World Trade Center in New York City. The attack of two planes levels the World Trade Center and the crash of one plane inflicts serious damage to the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, causing nearly 3,000 deaths. The fourth plane is heroically crashed by passengers into a Shanksville, Pennsylvania cornfield when they learn of the plot, preventing destruction of another structure in Washington, D.C., supposed to be the White House or the Capitol building. The plot is attributed to the Al-Qaeda organization led by Osama Bin Laden.
50 2001 September 18, 2001 - Anthrax attacks by mail from Princeton, New Jersey against news and government targets begin. Federal officials announce the first case on October 4. World wide concern about terrorism continues to escalate.
51 2002 November 21, 2002 - NATO invites additional members of the former Soviet bloc to join its membership. Seven nations are included in the invitation; Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

This shift comes at the expense of many brick and mortar chains, including Tower Records. The trend of purchasing items via the internet, instead of local stores, continues to grow.

59 2010 April 20, 2010 - A British Petroleum deep water oil rig explodes in the Gulf of Mexico, causing the largest oil spill in the history of the United States, killing eleven workers, and devastating the envirnoment. It also severely damaged the fishing and tourism industries of gulf states.
60 2011 March 15, 2011 - The largest recorded earthquake hits Japan followed by a huge tsunami. Three nucular power plants are danaged and remain in critical status for the next six weeks. Manufacturing plants in Japan can no longer produce and impacts the world economy.
