Additional information about Westmoreland County, PA around 1790: The first settlers to this area were from the Cumberland Valley and most were natives of Derry, Ireland (or were their immediate descendants). They actually settled the land before agreements were reached with the Indians. When the land office officially opened in 1769, these "squatters" were able to obtain land deeds. During a 1777 Indian raid, many of the settlers were killed and their harvest was lost. Individual families fortified their home so well each was referred to as Fort and their last name (for example, Fort Barr, Fort Wallace). Indian raids continued until the early 1780s. | |
