Chambers Walker
12/1821 - 1907
(Shown at age 89)
Chambers Walker was born on an unknown day in December 1821 in Jasper County, Georgia and died about 1907 in Haralson County, Georgia. Actual date of death is unknown. He lived to be about 85 years old.

Chambers married Nancy Crow in Fayette County Georgia on November 29, 1850. He is burried in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Haralson County. Dates on his tombstone read 1823-1907, however other records indicate he may have been born in 1821.

Chambers served in the Confederate Army, in Company F., 66th Georgia Infantry from the Putnam County Georgia area during the Civil War. No records have been found to indicate he received a pension for his services.

A story passed down from Callie Walker (Chambers and Nancy's daughter) provides a first hand account of the Battle of Atlanta. The family was living west of Atlanta (most likely present day Douglas County) when Callie remembers hearing the canons and guns as well as seeing fire in the distance. Callie also remembered when the Yankees came to their house. She said they did not hurt anyone or their belongings because her mother, Nancy Crow, was crippled.

Another story told by Mr. David Peyton as told by Lanny Cauthen (Chamber's grandson) tells of Chambers' Civil War experience. Chambers did not talk much about the Civil War. But, he was with General Joseph P. Johnson from Chattanooga to Atlanta. Chambers was captured in the Battle of Atlanta and carried to a prison camp in Indiana. He received permission to take his family and they moved to Indiana to live until the war was over. Mr. Peyton remembers his uncle, Jerry, telling the story of the trip. Jerry was about 14-15 years old. The general in charge of occupied Atlanta told them to bring household goods down to the river and he would have his men load them on a freight car. They lived in the freight car until they reached a town named Temple in Tennessee (somewhere between Chattanooga and Nashville). Grandma Walker had a young baby at the time (probably Wiley), who was about one year old. The train carring prisoners stopped to let a passenger train pass by and Grandma sent Jerry across the street to get milk for the baby. When he returned, the train had started and his brother, Wiley, pulled him up into the train, ripping his clothes off his belly. They lived in Indiana until the surrender and returned to Georgia in the spring of 1865.
