26 1607 Britain establishes their first successful colony at Jamestown, Virginia after King James I grants the Virginia Company a charter to settle in the Chesapeake Bay region.
29 1610 Pocahontas is captured by the Jamestown Colonists as misunderstandings and hostilities escalate between the two cultures. Two years later she will save John Smith's life.
38 1619 The first slaves are transported to America
39 1620 Massachusetts is established on November 9th, when the Mayflower lands at Plymouth Rock (Cape Cod, Massachusetts) with 101 colonists. Squanto, a Native American captured and taken to Britain several years earlier, travels with them and teaches them how to live off the land. On Nov. 11th, the Mayflower Compact is signed by 41 men and establishes the first form of local government.
40 1621 First treaty between colonists and Native Americans is signed by the Plymouth colonist and the Wampanoag. Squanto acts as a translator.
